Running Clubs in Malibu
Los Angeles, CA
Malibu offers some of the most dramatic running scenery in Southern California, combining long stretches of Pacific Coast Highway shoulder running with access to the trails of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. From beach runs along Zuma to canyon trails in Solstice Canyon, the terrain here is unmatched.
Zuma Beach provides a 2-mile stretch of firm sand running along one of Malibu's widest beaches — ideal for barefoot runs or sand workouts. Solstice Canyon Trail is one of the most accessible trail runs in the area, with a gentle 3-mile out-and-back through a lush canyon ending at the remains of a historic estate. Point Dume offers a short but steep climb to a bluff with 270-degree ocean views — a perfect addition to a beach run. For serious distance, Malibu Creek State Park and the Backbone Trail provide 30+ miles of interconnected trails through chaparral-covered mountains. PCH itself is runnable in the early morning hours when traffic is light, though the shoulder is narrow in spots. Running clubs in Malibu tend to be smaller and more trail-focused, meeting at trailheads like Solstice Canyon or the Corral Canyon entrance. Parking is available at state beach lots (day-use fee) and along PCH where permitted.
